Culture of Assam

Make the most of your Assam tour with a visit to Sabsagar, a historical city. You can also visit the beautiful Majuli Island that is set amidst the river Brahmaputra. Have the pleasure of visiting over 15 monasteries in Majuli Island.

Most of the Assamese are Vaishnavas and don’t believe in idol worship. These people are influenced by the Satras and the Naamghar. Satras are the site of religious and cultural practice, while Naamghar is the house of prayers. In Assam, you will find a number of tribes like Kachari, Bodo, Miri, Karbi, Rabha and Mishimi.

Assam has a population that follows different religions, ranging from Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. Majority of people here are either Hindus or Muslims. Bihu is the national festival of Assam that is celebrated with great enthusiasm in three parts of Assam.

Gamocha is the most recognizable cultural symbol of Assam that represents the religious and ethnic background of the state. Culture of Assam is also famous for a variety of dance forms, including, Bihu, Satriya Nritya, Tea Folk’s Jhumur Dance and Barpeta’s Bhortal Nritya.
