The northern part of the state is crowned with the Himalayas and the southern by the Bay of Bengal. These two geographic factors have a large influence on the state. Within the state of West Bengal, the northern region is colder than the southern region. Similarly in winter, the southern region tends to remain warmer owing to the presence of water, as compared to the northern region.
West Bengal is one of the first states to receive the rainfall by the monsoon winds which blow over the Bay of Bengal. Flowing over Assam and West Bengal, the monsoon winds deposit a lot of rainfall. Here as well, the amount of rainfall varies. The sub-Himalayan region gets a rainfall of around 2739 mm which the Gangantic West Bengal gets 1439 mm. The Cooch Behar and the Darjeeling experience heavy rainfall. The northern parts of the state experience a short lived spring season which comes around April.
